How to break into photojournalism

It's easy to find the names of photo editors from local newspapers. Call them or email them and say, “I shot a photo today that I thought you might be interested in seeing”. If your photos are good enough, editors will notice.

CREATE A PERSONAL WEB SITE.  For less than $200 a year, you can have your own domain name. Post a few examples of your photography and a link to how to contact you. Send that link to editors of newspapers in your area and ask them to consider you for future freelance opportunities. As a potential freelance photojournalist, you are essentially a business, and businesses need to advertise their product. Many photographers post samples of their photography on sites like WeSay.com too. Creating a WeSay account is a quick and free way to display your work online and you can simply send editors a link.

STAY PERSISTENT.  If an editor doesn't respond, that doesn't mean you didn't make an impression. I have found the single most important trait most great journalists have is persistence. Editors are busy people. If you continue to contact them (not too often of course) and search for good photographs, you will eventually crack your way through the walls of a very competitive business.

You can buy a simply domain name ("YourNamePhotogtraphy.com") online for a few dollars. You can transfer that domain name to a photo hosting web site for less than $100, often with p

Good basic information, Jason! (One of) The most important tips you offer is prompting amateur and would-be professional photographers to have an Internet "presence" (a personal web page) where they can upload and display their work. This is all part of what is called "branding your work" - a simple way of saying that anytime and anywhere you display or post your images, it is soooooo important that your "brand" accompany your image. On all my posted images I will always do a text overlay
