There are many photo contests out there (including one here at WeSay.com) and there aren't many better ways to feel validated as a photographer than winning one. But it's not easy. Your typical contest will have hundreds, even thousands, of submissions and only a handful win. Here are some tips to help you out:
1. FOLLOW THE RULES
The quickest way to get your photo eliminated from contention is by not following the official contest rules. Pay close attention to who is eligible to enter, how your photo should be submitted and the deadline.
2. SHARPNESS COUNTS
Sharpness counts. The second quickest way to get your photo eliminated is by submitting out-of-focus shots. I'm not talking about motion blur, which can be a great effect when done properly, but a photo where subject is not in focus.
3. KNOW THE CATEGORIES AND HAVE A CLEAR SUBJECT
Know the categories and have a clear subject. There's a reason why specific categories are listed in these contests. Make sure your entry has a distinct subject that clearly matches the category you are entering. It should be free of distractions and confusing elements. Even if it's not great, if your submission is on target it will go far.
4. HAVE A HUMAN TOUCH
Have a human touch. Photos with human elements innately have a stronger connection. Even if the category is non-human like 'sunsets,' a shot of a silhouetted couple walking down a beach at sunset will do much better than the same shot without anyone in it.
5. STUDY PREVIOUS WINNERS
